Additionally, a limited edition Meta Quest “influenced” by Xbox is on the horizon.
Earlier today, Meta made a significant announcement regarding the mixed reality business. The company stated that it will be exposing the Quest’s operating system to third-party companies, which will enable these companies to construct their own headgear. To put it another way, you could think of it as pushing the Quest ecosystem away from the Apple paradigm, in which a single company develops both the hardware and the software, and toward a more open-source hardware architecture similar to Android. The Quest operating system is currently undergoing a rebranding process to become known as the “Meta Horizon OS,” and it appears that it has already attracted two early users. A new line of “performance gaming” headsets is currently being developed by the Republic of Gamers (ROG) brand of ASUS, while Lenovo is working on developing products that are designed to facilitate “productivity, learning, and entertainment.” (Don’t forget that Lenovo was also responsible for the production of the negative Oculus Rift S.)
In addition, Meta has revealed that it is currently developing a limited-edition Quest headgear that is “inspired” by the Xbox in some way. Recently, Microsoft and Meta collaborated in order to provide Xbox cloud gaming to the Quest through their joint efforts. Furthermore, Meta is requesting that Google facilitate the transfer of the Google Play 2D app store to the Meta Horizon OS platform. In addition, software that was produced through the Quest App Lab will be showcased in the Horizon Store. This is made in an effort to increase the amount of material that is available within the Horizon ecosystem. Additionally, the company is working on a new spatial framework that will enable designers of mobile applications to create mixed reality applications.
Yuanqing Yang, Chair and CEO of Lenovo, said in a statement that mixed reality is “transforming how people interface with computers by integrating digital experiences and physical spaces to reach new levels of productivity, learning, and play.” Mixed reality is a technology that combines digital and physical environments. In order to accelerate the adoption of new user scenarios in mixed reality, such as virtual screens, remote presence, content consumption, and immersive training, Lenovo is bringing together Meta Horizon OS with our expertise and innovation in personal computing. This is a continuation of our previous successful relationship.
