The function looks like Google Lens with AI added to it.
An exciting new artificial intelligence capability is being teased by Google one day before the company’s I/O developer conference. What appears to be a new camera-powered artificial intelligence capability that is able to recognize what is in the frame in real time was demonstrated in a little video that the firm released on X device.
In the video, which is referred to as a “prototype,” what appears to be a Pixel smartphone with the camera open is seen observing the keynote stage at the annual developer conference (I/O). The individual who is in charge of the camera poses the question, “Hey, what do you think is going on here?”
In response, a voice makes the following statement: “It appears that people are preparing for a significant event, possibly a conference or presentation.” Additionally, it is able to recognize the letters “IO” as being associated with Google’s developer conference and highlights “new advancements in artificial intelligence.” At the same time as the two voices are switching places, a text transcript is displayed on the screen.

There are some similarities between this tool and Google Lens, which is the company’s camera-powered search feature; nonetheless, it is not quite apparent what the feature is. What is seen in the teaser video, on the other hand, seems to be functioning in real time and responding to voice instructions in a manner that is comparable to the multimodal artificial intelligence that is present in Meta’s smart glasses. In addition, the fact that the demonstration is displayed on a Pixel device is intriguing because Google frequently launches new AI-powered features on its Pixel portfolio before any other mobile device.
Although it is rather rare for Google to preview one of its announcements so soon before its big keynote, it is likely not a coincidence that the firm posted the video at the same time that OpenAI demonstrated capabilities that are comparable to those of the GPT-4o model during a live event. Whatever Google has in store for us, however, we won’t have to wait much longer to find out the complete specifics of what they have plans. This coming Monday, May 14, marks the beginning of Google I/O, and Newtechmania will be present in Mountain View to cover the keynote presentation.
