The Jack Dorsey-backed platform, which started off as a Twitter internal project, continues to pique people’s interest.
Just one day after releasing its platform to the general public, Bluesky, which is an open-source alternative to Twitter, has witnessed a significant increase in the number of new users. More than 850,000 new customers have signed up for the program, bringing the total number of signing ups to slightly more than 4 million.
An invitation-only beta version of the service had been running for around one year, and by the time it was made available to the general public, it had amassed a little more than three million members. According to a tracker that is available online, it has about 4.1 million people signing up for it at the moment. The Chief Executive Officer of Bluesky, Jay Graber, remarked in a post on X that “things are rolling over here.”
The increase in the number of new users indicates that there is still a significant amount of interest in the platform that was initially developed as an internal project at Twitter in 2019. Additionally, it suggested that Meta has not completely cornered the market for a text-based alternative to Twitter that is currently available. During the previous week, Meta made the announcement that the Threads app has reached a total of 130 million monthly users.
Graber has stated that Bluesky had the intention of expanding at a slower rate so that it could construct the platform and the underlying protocol without the additional pressure that can be caused by abrupt surges in development. As a result of the surge in traffic that occurred over the course of the previous day, the website had a number of technical challenges. These issues included trouble with the app’s custom feeds as well as a temporary outage that persisted throughout the night. According to the company, the outage was fixed within a few of hours of its having occurred.
A significant portion of Bluesky’s future success will be contingent on the company’s ability to sustain fresh growth and manage to maintain the interest of all of its new users. Additionally, Threads experienced a surge in the number of new members at first, but then it began to decline and gradually began to recover.
Bluesky is a platform that is fundamentally different from Threads or X, despite the fact that it may have a similar appearance between the two. It is also a part of the rising push for decentralized social media. Graber asserts that the open-source protocol operates in a manner similar to that of a “permanently open” application programming interface (API), and the website already has dozens of developers working on their own experiences. Bluesky also provides users with additional customization options, such as the ability to select their own content moderation settings and the opportunity to create their own algorithms.
