Your Signal username is always changeable and can be shared.

The instant messaging programme Signal is most well-known for the privacy-related settings it offers; yet, because phone numbers have been at the core of the platform ever since it was first introduced, there was no way to completely conceal your personal phone number until recently. Signal made the announcement earlier today that you will soon be able to create a unique username (which should not be confused with your profile name). Not only will you be able to share your username with others through a link or QR code, but you will also be able to share your number with them. As part of Signal’s attempts to prevent spoofing, you will have the ability to alter your one-of-a-kind username as frequently as you like; however, the result must include at least two numbers at the end of the username value. Given that this is an optional feature, you even have the ability to completely delete your account.

You will, of course, still be required to provide a phone number in order to join up for Signal; however, it is important to note that, as a result of the new default, your phone number will no longer be accessible to anyone (you have the ability to manually modify this setting if necessary). As an additional feature, there will be a new option that will prohibit someone from locating you based on your phone number; in order to do so, they will need to have your precise unique username. In other words, individuals who already possess your phone number will not necessarily be aware that you are also on Signal. This is a positive aspect to consider if you would like to maintain your anonymity within the public groups that are available on this platform.

As is the case with each new feature, spammers and fraudsters will soon find a method to misuse usernames, as you will not be able to verify their numbers instantaneously. This is because you will not verify their numbers immediately. An important piece of advice is that whenever you come across new connections that seem to be people you already know, you should always make sure to verify their identities through other means, preferably in person or at the very least by a phone conversation. You will be able to notice these new Signal features in a few weeks, or you will have the opportunity to get a taste of them in advance through the beta release.
