Older versions of the device will no longer receive support from the streaming streaming giant.
A heads up to those of you who are still using an Apple TV box from the second or third generation: if you want to continue using your set-top box to stream Netflix, you will soon be required to upgrade. On the 31st of July, Netflix will no longer provide support for those devices.
Apple Insider reports that Netflix is sending out emails to its subscribers in order to inform them of the change. The company did not provide a comprehensive explanation for why it is discontinuing support for the two boxes, each of which was introduced more than ten years ago. However, it did state that it is doing so in order to “maintain the best possible Netflix experience.” On the other hand, this is difficult to accomplish on older hardware because it will not be able to handle more recent codecs.
In a general sense, it is unfortunate to see large services abandoning older technology, particularly taking into consideration the fact that this will increase the likelihood of those goods becoming waste and being disposed of in landfills. To put this into perspective, there is frequently a point at which it is no longer rational to continue providing support for an aging device user base that is decreasing in size.
However, as luck would have it, the most recent version of the Apple TV 4K is currently available for purchase. The 64GB version is now available for $90, which is a $40 discount and represents the version’s lowest price that we have seen to this yet.
