Although there will be a cost for the sale of automobiles, there will be no fees for any other category.
Today marks the day when eBay consumer-to-consumer (C2C) sellers in the United Kingdom will no longer be required to pay selling fees for any domestic purchases they undertake. In the beginning of this year, the firm conducted its initial test of free selling for previously used clothing. After analyzing the results of this test, eBay made the decision to throw open the floodgates.
Additionally, eBay eliminated seller fees in Germany for domestic sales, in addition to the first test that was conducted in the United Kingdom. According to the CEO and President of eBay, Jamie Iannone, who made the news today, doing so has the potential to “strengthen our marketplace by lowering the barriers to C2C selling, which improves the breadth and depth of inventory on eBay.” With that being said, Iannone also indicated that the corporation will start imposing a “buyer-facing fee” at the beginning of the following year.
The fact that the United Kingdom is home to hundreds of millions of products that have not been used was one of the grounds that was stated for the abolition of seller fees. Iannone is of the opinion that sellers would be more likely to set up business on eBay if they were not required to pay money in order to post products and if they did not have to worry about the corporation taking a share of the money that is received after a sale. It is possible that the marketplace may become “more vibrant” if it were to receive a wider variety of things from customers rather than only from professional merchants.
Vinted and Depop are two younger e-commerce platforms that do not charge seller fees, and they are also a competitor to eBay. Vinted, in example, is a marketplace for second-hand goods that focuses primarily on clothing, and eBay’s decision to eliminate seller fees for clothing is a direct response to the competition. There has also been expansion on Depop, which is owned by Etsy. Because of this, it should not come as a surprise that eBay is following in the footsteps of its rival.
A “streamlined listing process,” an improved local pickup process, and an improved wallet experience through eBay Balance were some of the additional adjustments and enhancements that were stated in the statement. During the subsequent Global All Hands event, eBay intends to provide additional information regarding its future objectives.
