Later this year, the tool will be released by the corporation.

Specifically, Samsung has disclosed that the Food and Drug Administration has given its approval for a sleep apnea detection feature to be implemented on Galaxy Watch devices in the United States. This is the first approval of its sort in the United States, according to the business, which notes that South Korean officials had already given their clearance for the function to be used in that country.

At some point during the third quarter of this year, Samsung intends to incorporate the sleep apnea monitoring function into wearables that are compatible with the Galaxy Watch. The Samsung Health Monitor app will be the one to make it available to users.

Through the use of their smartwatch and phone, those aged 22 and older who have not yet been diagnosed with sleep apnea are able to verify whether or not they are experiencing symptoms of the illness. In the course of a two-night monitoring session, it searches for indications of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) that range from mild to severe severity. To be able to use the feature, users will be required to keep a sleep log for a period of ten days that includes more than four hours of sleep twice.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent and persistent disorder that affects around twenty-five percent of males and ten percent of women in the United States. People who have this illness have a tendency to stop breathing while they are sleeping, which can be detrimental to the quality of their sleep, disrupt the oxygen flow, and cause them to feel more exhausted during the day. Untreated, the condition “sleep apnea can compound the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmia and stroke,” according to Samsung. A greater number of people should be able to recognize moderate and severe instances of the ailment, and when they do, they should seek medical treatment, according to the business, which noted that the function should aid more people.

Other variations of the feature, which is connected to Samsung’s other initiatives to assist its customers in getting a good night’s sleep, have been found in devices in different locations. The sleep tracking mat manufactured by Withings was upgraded with a sleep apnea detection capability in the year 2020.
