The agreement is comparable to the one that Reddit and Google made just a few months prior.
On Thursday, OpenAI and Reddit made the announcement of a partnership that will enable OpenAI to access Reddit discussions through ChatGPT and will also enable Reddit to provide its users with features that are powered by artificial intelligence. According to a joint statement released by both firms, the agreement would “enable OpenAI’s tools to better understand and showcase Reddit content, particularly on recent topics.” As a further component of the arrangement, OpenAI will also become an advertising partner on Reddit. This implies that it will be responsible for running advertisements on the platform.
According to reports, the agreement is comparable to the one that Reddit made with Google in February, which is estimated to be worth sixty million dollars. In response to Newtechmania’s request for comment, a spokesman for Reddit declined to divulge the specifics of the OpenAI arrangement, and OpenAI did not react to the request for comment.
OpenAI is forming more and more collaborations with publishers in order to acquire data that it may use to continue training its artificial intelligence models. Within the span of just a few weeks, the startup has already struck contracts with the Financial Times and Dotdash Meredith. During the previous year, it also formed a partnership with the German publisher Axel Springer in order to train its models on news from the German publications Bild and Die Welt as well as the American publications Politico and Business Insider.
OpenAI will be granted access to Reddit’s Data API as a result of the new arrangement. According to the business, this will enable it to obtain “real time, structured, and unique content from Reddit.” Regarding the artificial intelligence (AI) elements that Reddit will include into its platform as a result of the cooperation, it is not evident. A spokeswoman for Reddit declined to comment on the matter.
In the previous year, the problem of gaining access to Reddit’s data, which is a rich source of information that is generated in real time by humans and is frequently of high quality, became a contentious topic after the company announced that it would begin charging developers to use its application programming interface (API). As an immediate consequence of this, dozens of third-party Reddit clients were compelled to close their operations, and thousands of subreddits went black as a form of protest. While this was going on, Reddit maintained its position and stated that huge artificial intelligence businesses were scraping its data without paying for it. Since that time, Reddit has been monetizing its data by entering into such agreements with Google and OpenAI, both of which are dependent on having access to it in order to make progress in the training of their artificial intelligence models.
