The vast majority of people will have to wait until autumn.

In the event that you have been fantasizing about spending your summer uttering sweet nothings into the digital ears of one of the alluring ChatGPT voice assistants that OpenAI demonstrated over the course of the previous month, you will have to continue to fantasize for a little while longer. The company made the announcement on Tuesday that the “advanced Voice Mode” feature requires further time in the oven “to reach our bar to launch.” In order to collect feedback, the functionality will initially be made available to a select number of users. Subsequently, in the fall, it will be made available to all paying ChatGPT subscribers.

An announcement made by OpenAI on X stated, “We are working to improve the model’s ability to detect and refuse certain content.” In addition to this, we are trying to enhance the user experience and get our infrastructure ready to scale to millions of users while still preserving real-time responses.

We're sharing an update on the advanced Voice Mode we demoed during our Spring Update, which we remain very excited about:

We had planned to start rolling this out in alpha to a small group of ChatGPT Plus users in late June, but need one more month to reach our bar to launch.…

Since the year 2023, ChatGPT has included voices as a component. Nevertheless, OpenAI presented a demonstration of an improved version which sounded so humanlike that it attracted similarities with Samantha, the alluring voice assistant in the film Her, which was released in 2013, and Scarlett Johansson played the role of Samantha. In spite of the fact that she had denied permission, the actress claimed that OpenAI had copied her voice some weeks after the presentation.

OpenAI has stated that it is still determining when each of the new voices, with the exception of the Johansson soundalike, will be made available to paying users in the fall. An additional function that enables voice assistants to make use of the camera on your phone in order to comprehend the environment around you has also been postponed until that later date. According to the explanation provided by the corporation, “exact timelines depend on meeting our high safety and reliability bar.”
