Minecraft will discontinue VR support next spring

On the other hand, at long last, the PlayStation 5 gets its very own version of the game that is native to the console.

In the not too distant future, virtual and mixed reality will meet the same fate as a hissing creeper for Minecraft players. Mojang, the game’s developer, made the announcement a month ago that April 2025 would be the final update for the PlayStation VR version of the game. Similar language was used in the patch notes for the Bedrock edition of the game that were released yesterday. The patch notes stated that “Our ability to support VR/MR devices has come to an end, and will no longer be supported in updates after March of 2025.”

For those who have been enjoying Minecraft in virtual reality, there is still hope for those who have been building blocks. Following the final update that was released in March 2025, the patch notes make it clear that “you can continue building in your worlds, and your Marketplace purchases (including Minecoins) will continue to be available on a non-VR/MR graphics device such as a computer monitor.” For a game that had such a good fit for the virtual reality experience, this is a very unfortunate turn of events. In addition, considering the enormous sales statistics that Minecraft continues to achieve year after year, it is somewhat disheartening for the virtual reality and mixed reality ecosystem as a whole to lose such a well-known game.

The Minecraft community, on the other hand, does have a bright side to rejoice about. At long last, a native version of the game is now available for the PlayStation 5, after a somewhat extended period of time. Up until now, Sony’s most recent console generation has been limited to playing the PS4 version of the game. However, going ahead, the game will have a resolution of 4K and will be able to maintain 60 frames per second even when the draw distance is increased. If you already possess the PS4 version of Minecraft and own a PlayStation 5, you are eligible to receive the new update for free from the PlayStation Store after purchasing it. In addition, the implementation of the Bundles of Bravery upgrade that took place yesterday makes this a very promising time to begin a new blocky journey.
