Google Maps flags businesses with suspicious reviews

This information is displayed on the pull-up screen for the company.

Over time, I have gradually become that annoying person who refuses to go somewhere without first seeing what other people have to say about it on Google Maps. Having said that, I am relieved to see that Google is making it easier to identify phony reviews because I am also sensitive to situations in which the evaluations are excessively positive. It seems that I am impossible to please. Google is currently providing a warning to businesses that are relevant to the situation, writing, “Suspected fake reviews were recently removed from this place.”

Google has been subjected to criticism in the past, including from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) of the United Kingdom, which initiated an investigation into the company’s handling of bogus reviews in the year 2021. Possibly by accident, a user on X (which was formerly known as Twitter) was the first person to notice the change in how reviews were handled on a Maps page for a company located in the United Kingdom.

Although Google has not yet confirmed the feature or specified where it will be available, Search Engine Roundtable has reported that Google has just updated its relevant help page to include support for worldwide applications.

Businesses that violate Google’s Fake Engagement policy are subject to one or more of the restrictions that are outlined in this information. One important thing to note is that the “business profile will display a warning to let consumers know that fake reviews were removed.” The inability to receive new ratings or reviews, as well as the inability to post previously published ones, are two further temporary restrictions. If any of these steps take place, Google will send an email to the owners of the firm, and they will have the opportunity to appeal the decision.

Fake reviews might originate from businesses that are attempting to improve their ratings, but they can also originate from individuals who are looking to bring down the ratings of the company. In the event that a company reports these phony reviews, it is not clear whether the same warning will be displayed (due to the fact that the wording clearly makes the company appear to be taking responsibility).
