When it is time for students to return to school, there will be a significant increase in the number of students who cheat by, umm, conducting research with the chatbot.
Because of this, it should come as no surprise that investors were eager to put their money into OpenAI. It was announced by OpenAI that “every week, over 250 million people around the world use ChatGPT to enhance their work, creativity, and learning.” This information was disclosed alongside the revelation that the business had successfully raised $6.6 billion in capital financing. Since late August, when OpenAI announced that the chatbot had 200 million weekly users, this is a significant increase. This is double the amount of users it had in November of last year. According to records obtained by The New York Times from OpenAI’s internal operations, as of the month of June, 350 million individuals were using the company’s products on a monthly basis. The number of persons who are paying for access as opposed to those who are using the free tier is not easily discernible.
It is not entirely clear why there was such a significant growth in the number of users in such a short period of time, just a couple of months. On the other hand, students have recently returned to school and may be using the chatbot to attempt to cheat or conduct some fast research. Assuming that Apple ultimately adds ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence, which is expected to take place in the next months, OpenAI may undoubtedly anticipate that the number of users of ChatGPT will experience yet another significant increase.
