The Tesla app will have the capability “in the future,” according to the company.

Tesla has published a sneak peek of a new ride-hailing feature in its app, which will be released when its robotaxi debuts in August. The business published some mockups of the planned feature, promoting the capability to “summon” a ride using the Tesla app. The business didn’t go into much detail about how it will function. However, the images presented some features similar to those of Uber: one had a user option to shiver and heat up the car until it arrived. Elon Musk, the company’s CEO, announced on June 1 that Tesla would introduce its highly anticipated robotaxis on August 8.

The launch of Tesla’s self-driving ride-hailing service has been teased by Elon Musk for years. The CEO claimed in 2019 that the robotaxi will start transporting passengers in that year. Vulgarity is currently launching such services. It is unknown if or when it may be used outside of the organization. On an earnings call, Tesla said, “We are working on procurement functionality .” “We believe the software experience is better than that of any of our products, and it will be simple to enable the app for rides.”

Tesla disclosed the update in its 2024 first-quarter financial report. The carmaker revealed that its revenue fell by 9% from the previous year, marking the sharpest drop it has experienced in over ten years.

In a conference call with investors, Musk proposed that the ride-hailing service, which he called “Cyber Cab,” would operate similarly to “some sort of hybrid between Uber and Airbnb,” allowing Tesla owners to opt to include their cars in the service. According to Musk, “there will be a certain number of cars in the fleet that Tesla owns and operates.” There will be a number of vehicles that are owned by the final customer, but they are free to add or remove their vehicle from the fleet at any time. Additionally, customers have the option to specify who may drive the car—friends and family only, five-star users only, or everyone at all.”
