You did really read correctly.
I was wondering how many of you had the phrase “sequel to a game from 1982” written on your bingo card for the Nintendo Indie World Showcase. In that case, you just won a significant amount. It only took 42 short years for Yars Rising to become a reality. It is a modern metroidvania game that is a reimagining of the iconic Yars’ Revenge game that was released on the Atari 2600. By my calculations, this is the longest gap between sequels in the history of video games, and it’s not even close to being the longest.
Not only is that a fascinating fact about this game, but there are many more. The game is a metroidvania, as was said earlier; nevertheless, WayForward is the developer of this particular game. The company is essentially a metroidvania and retro-gaming factory, going all the way back to the Game Boy Color and the original Shantae. For those who are not familiar with the company, below is a brief explanation. Since then, WayForward has created a multitude of wonderful Shantae titles in addition to a large number of other games in the metroidvania genre. One of these games is The Mummy Demastered, which is a game that is criminally undervalued. The video game Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, which is regarded to be the spiritual successor to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, was also developed with assistance from WayForward. The developers have a lot of insight.
While it is true that Yars Rising is the sequel to Yars’ Revenge, this does not mean that it is played in any way similar to the original game. An early example of what would later be known as shoot ’em ups, such as R-Type and Ikaruga, the original game was an excellent example of this genre. The most recent one is a platformer with a sidescrolling view, but instead of playing as a flying alien bug, you take control of a person. On the other hand, it appears that there are a great deal of narrative references to the original.
“a balance of stealth and combat” and a large number of “retro-inspired mini-games” are among the features that the developer plans to include in addition to the typical metroidvania action. In the latter part of this year, it will be available for both consoles and personal computers. While everything is going on, I will begin making preparations for Yars Returns in the year 2066.
