‘Hundreds’ of commands will be supported by the functionality, which would allow users to control particular app functionalities.
According to a report by Bloomberg, Apple is currently working on a new version of its Siri voice assistant that will utilize powerful artificial intelligence that is powered by large language models (LLMs). The technology will enable users to conduct certain app operations with their voices, such as opening documents, sending emails, and a variety of other functions.
For the time being, the new version of Siri will only be compatible with applications developed by Apple. According to the source, it will not be included in iOS 18, but it may be published as an update at some point in the early part of the next year.
The assistant will be able to examine the activities that take place on your phone and will immediately activate features that are controlled by Siri. If the report is to be believed, it will initially be able to handle only one command at a time, despite the fact that it will accommodate “hundreds” of commands. At a later time, Siri will be able to manage many tasks inside a single search.
At the beginning, the commands that would be offered would include the ability to send or delete emails, open a particular website within Apple News, send an email with a web link, or request an article summary. After numerous commands have been enabled, it will be possible to summarize a recorded meeting and then send a text message to a colleague, all inside the same batch of requests. According to what Mark Gurman of Bloomberg noted, “Or, it is theoretically possible to ask an iPhone to crop a picture and then email it to a friend.”
There is no information available regarding the LLM that Apple will use to power this version of Siri; however, it has been rumored that the company has just secured an agreement with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT into iOS 18. Alongside this, it is possible that Apple is in negotiations with Google to incorporate Gemini AI into the search capabilities of iPhones. It is rumored that Apple will handle many requests for artificial intelligence on the device itself, while using the cloud for more complicated commands.
AI is anticipated to be the primary emphasis of Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference 2024, which will take place from June 10 to June 14. During that time, it is possible that it may disclose that it has secured an agreement with OpenAI to incorporate ChatGPT into iOS 18. In addition, we might see capabilities enabled by AI such as transcriptions and summaries of voice memos, website recaps, automatic message responses, and some other similar functions.
