Happy hunting, RTX 30 series owners.
In contrast to Nvidia, AMD’s FSR upscaling technology is freely available for download, meaning that anyone can play around with the code. AMD recently released the source code for FSR 3, and since then, modders have taken that code and created a tool that allows you to replace Nvidia’s DLSS frame generation in any game with AMD’s FSR 3 frame generation. While this is not a perfect solution—such workarounds are not without their drawbacks—it does bring frame generation to games and GPUs that did not previously support it.
Although Nvidia has stated that the hardware it has implemented for this technology in Ada Lovelace means it would not run well on older GPUs, Videocardz has posted screenshots of it running on an RTX 3080 in Cyberpunk 2077, though it notes gamers should expect issues. Since it is a mod and not native to the GPUs in question, there could be visual artifacts and instability, but as always, it will vary on a game-by-game basis. The real audience for these mods is owners of the RTX 30-series, who have powerful GPUs but no support for frame generation, as that is a feature exclusive to the newer 40-series.
If you are interested in giving it a try with an older Nvidia or AMD GPU, you can now play around with a number of mods. Some of them are available for free, while others are hidden behind Patreon paywalls. All of them require some familiarity with manipulating file directories, replacing DLL files, and adjusting settings both in-game and in the Nvidia control panel. Basically, what they do is enable frame generation on cards that were not able to do so before, but since the source code has only been available for a few days, not many games have tested it yet, so your mileage may (will) differ.
The video above shows an RTX 3080 running Cyberpunk at 1440p and going from 46fps to 84fps with frame gen, which is impressive. The mods also work well with The Witcher 3, though Hitman 3 and the new Ratchet and Clank game have some issues. Still, if you have a previous-gen Nvidia GPU and have been itching to run it with ray tracing without your fps tanking, it sounds like it could be a fun experiment.
