Android users may now annotate documents with a finger or a stylus thanks to an upgrade that was unveiled at MWC.

In the near future, Google Docs will be introducing an annotation tool that will enable users to mark up their pages in the same manner that they would with a pen and paper. Users of Google Docs on Android devices now have the ability to use a finger or a stylus to create notes, highlight text, and circle words to their heart’s content. This update was unveiled during the Mobile World Congress 2024 Conference. Google has stated that the functionality will be compatible with Android tablets and smartphones, which means that it has the potential to provide devices such as foldables with an even greater benefit in terms of productivity. Additionally, it ought to make the process of signing digital papers more streamlined.

With the new annotation tool for Google Docs, users of Android devices will have access to a variety of pen colours and highlighters. This is excellent news for anyone who enjoys color-coding their notes. If there is one thing that we have learned from the proliferation of digital notebooks such as reMarkable’s tablets or Amazon’s Kindle Scribe, it is that despite the fact that typing may be quite quick, a significant number of individuals still prefer to write by hand when it is accessible to them. The only thing that appears to be missing from this version is the capability to convert handwriting to text, which would make it possible to complete other writing activities that are more thorough. With regard to this matter, Apple is a few steps ahead of the competition, as it provides the functionality for users of the Apple Pencil on a number of its native iPad productivity applications, such as Pages and Numbers.
