‘Ongoing notifications’ like Apple’s Live Activities may come to Android

One possible release date for the feature is Android 16.

Reports indicate that Google is now developing on a new Android application programming interface (API) for what it is referring to as Rich Ongoing Notifications. This API would enable applications to display information in a status bar in a manner that is comparable to Apple’s Live Activities in the Dynamic Island on the iPhone. According to journalist Mishaal Rahman, who discovered the code in the Android 15 QPR1 Beta 3 release, this is the case. It is possible that it will function in a manner that is very similar to the time tracker that is now displayed when you are on a phone call. This time tracker is displayed in a bubble at the top of the display, and you can tap on it to open the app and view additional information.

“The application programming interface (API) will enable applications to create chips with their own text and background color that are displayed in the status bar,” Rahman writes in an article for Android Authority. While using other applications, it might be especially helpful for things like transportation updates, which would enable users to keep track of important information such as departure timings or the estimated time of arrival (ETA) of an Uber. It is possible that we will not be able to view the feature until some time in the future because it is not yet finished. The arrival of Android 16 is what Rahman anticipates it will be.
