By joining the lobbying organization, it will become the seventh member of the group.
Become the eighth member of Hollywood’s most influential lobbying group, Amazon is joining the group. To be more specific, Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios will join the Motion Picture Association on October 1st, joining six other major studios that are already members of the organization. These studios include Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, Universal Studios, The Walt Disney Studios, Warner Bros. Discovery, and Netflix, which joined the organization in 2019.
Amazon was previously connected with the MPA, having served as a member of the governing board of the Alliance for Creativity and Entertainment, which is a group that works to combat piracy, since 2017. The Motion Picture Association (MPA) was a member of MGM from 1928 to 2005, when it was acquired by Amazon in 2022.
“Welcoming Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios to our ranks will broaden our collective policymaking and content protection efforts on behalf of our most innovative and creative companies,” said Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association (MPA), in a statement. “The MPA is the global voice for an industry that is growing and evolving,” Rivkin said. Across the world, MPA studios contribute to the growth of local economies, the creation of new jobs, the enhancement of cultures, and the strengthening of communities. With Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios among our roster of remarkable members, the Motion Picture Producers Association will have an even larger voice for the most talented storytellers in the globe.
The fact that Amazon is involved with the MPA is evidence of the widespread presence that the corporation has in the entertainment industry. The fact that both Amazon and Netflix are members of the organization is further evidence of the significant impact that streaming has had on the industry as a whole.
