There is a possibility that the mastermind will be fined $6 million.
Calls made in January that were created by artificial intelligence that imitated the voice of Vice President Joe Biden encouraged voters not to participate in the New Hampshire Primary. Now, as the election of 2024 draws closer, the Federal Communications Commission is sending a message by further cracking down on individuals responsible for the deepfake that was created by Joe Biden. There will be a civil penalty of one million dollars levied against Lingo Telecom by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), and the company will also be required to establish and implement a compliance plan.
The Chief of the Enforcement Bureau, Loyaan A. Egal, made the following statement in reaction to the settlement: “…the potential combination of the misuse of generative AI voice-cloning technology and caller ID spoofing over the United States communications network presents a significant threat.” With this settlement, a clear message is conveyed that communications service providers are the first line of defense against these dangers, and that they will be held accountable to ensure that they do their share to safeguard the American public.
A proposed fine of six million dollars has been recommended by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) for Steven Kramer, the political strategist who supervised the calls. By impersonating a local politician’s phone number, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) claims that he also violated the Truth in Caller ID Act. There has been no action taken regarding the enforcement of Kramer’s case yet.
